베트남 Outreach를 다녀와서
“하나님은 베트남을 사랑하십니다”
베트남은 선교하기 어려운 땅이라는 말을 자주 들었습니다.
외국인이 복음을 전하거나 설교하려면 정부로부터 정식 허가(설교권)를 받아야만 가능하다는 이야기...
복음을 자유롭게 전할 수 없다면, 복음은 어떻게 전해질 수 있을까?
그 질문을 품고 저는 베트남으로 향했습니다.
현지의 복음화율은 0.2~ 0.3%에 불과합니다.
그런데도 놀랍게도, 교회는 조금씩 성장하고 있었고,
복음이 사람의 말이 아닌 하나님의 방법으로 스며들고 있음을 눈으로 확인하게 되었습니다.

한 가지 인상 깊었던 것은,
베트남에는 약 1,000명의 목회자가 부족하다는 현실입니다.
그 부족함은 역설적으로 교회가 세워지고 있다는 것으로 이해했습니다.

저는 이런 생각이 들었습니다.
“혹시 하나님께서 서구식 선교가 아닌, 이 땅에 자생적인 교회를 세워가도록 역사하시는 건 아닐까?”
하나님의 선교 전략은, 현지 교회가 스스로 자립하여 복음을 전하고,
그 땅의 문화를 이해하며 선교하는 것임을 조금씩 깨닫게 되었습니다.
스스로 복음을 살아낼 수 있도록 돕는 선교, 그것이 지금 베트남에 필요한 사역이었습니다.

이번 아웃리치 중 까마우(Cà Mau)성에 있는 여러 교회들을 방문했습니다.
도시에서 6시간 이상을 달려간 시골 교회들—
허... 교회, 까... 교회, 우... 교회, 찌... 교회.
열악한 환경 속에서도 포기하지 않고 복음을 붙드는 현지 목회자들의 얼굴은 제게 희망의 얼굴이었습니다.

베트남은 의무교육 제도가 없습니다.
가난한 부모들은 자녀들을 학교에 보내지 못하고,
아이들은 부모를 따라 구걸하며 하루하루를 살아갑니다.
그런 아이들을 모아 공부방 사역을 시작한 한 목회자 가정을 만났습니다.
그 사역은 단순한 교육이 아니라, 복음의 통로였습니다.
GEM(잼) 선교회는 이 공부방 사역을 현지 교회와 함께 이어갈 예정입니다.
또한 출생 신고되지 않은 아이들,
청년들을 교사로 훈련해 여름성경학교로 파송하는 YVN 사역,
깨끗한 물을 공급하기 위한 물 정수 사업,
베트남 아이들 이름을 새긴 성경나눔 등
선교사님과 현지 교회가 협력하여 다양한 방법으로 복음을 전하고 있었습니다.

아웃리치 기간 동안,
저는 늘 하나님의 시각, 하나님의 마음, 하나님의 관점으로 이 땅을 보기를 기도했습니다.
매일 아침에는 데일리 말씀을 통해 주신 은혜를 나누고,
저녁에는 피드백과 나눔을 통해
“우리는 이 선교에 어떻게 동참할 것인가?”를 함께 고민했습니다.

이 여정을 통해 알게 된 것은, 선교는 우리가 가서 무엇을 ‘하는 것’이 아니라, 하나님이 보여주시는 것을 ‘보는 것’이라는 사실입니다.
저는 처음에 베트남을 ‘복음을 전하기 어려운 땅’이라고 생각했습니다.
하지만 하나님의 시각으로 보니, 이 땅은 복음의 희망이 있는 땅이었습니다.
이제는, 하나님께서 보여주신 것을 따라 순종할 시간입니다.

After Returning from the Vietnam Outreach
"God Loves Vietnam."
I had often heard that Vietnam is a difficult land for missions.
They say that foreigners are not allowed to preach or share the gospel unless they have official government permission.
So I wondered:
“If the gospel cannot be preached freely, then how can it be shared at all?”
With that question in my heart, I headed to Vietnam.
The percentage of Christians in Vietnam is only around 0.2–0.3%.
And yet, to my surprise, I witnessed churches slowly growing.
I saw with my own eyes how the gospel was quietly spreading—not through human efforts, but through God's own way.
One thing that left a deep impression on me was this:
Vietnam currently lacks about 1,000 pastors.
This shortage, paradoxically, revealed that churches are being planted.
It made me wonder:
“Could it be that God is working not through Western-style missions, but by raising up indigenous churches from within this land?”
I began to realize that God's mission strategy might be for local churches to become self-supporting, sharing the gospel themselves—rooted in their own culture and language.
What Vietnam needs now is missions that empower local believers to live out the gospel themselves.
That is the kind of ministry I witnessed.
During this outreach, we visited several churches in Cà Mau Province, a region more than six hours from the city.
We met churches in Heo…, Ca…, U…, and Chi… villages.
In extremely poor conditions, local pastors continued to hold onto the gospel with perseverance.
Their faces were truly faces of hope to me.
Vietnam has no national compulsory education system.
Many poor parents cannot afford to send their children to school.
So children follow their parents to beg in the streets just to survive.
We met one pastor’s family who began an after-school ministry for these children.
It wasn’t just about education—it became a powerful tool for the gospel.
GEM Mission plans to support and partner with this study room ministry in cooperation with the local church.
Other ongoing ministries include:
Helping children without birth registration
Training local youth as teachers to serve in YVN (Youth Vietnam) summer schools
Providing clean water through water filtration projects
Distributing Bibles with Vietnamese children’s names written inside
Through various means, missionaries and local churches are working together to spread the gospel.
During the outreach, I continually prayed,
"Lord, help me see this land through Your eyes, with Your heart, and from Your perspective."
Each morning, we shared grace through daily devotions.
Every evening, we gathered for feedback and sharing, asking together:
"How can we participate in this mission?"
One of the greatest lessons I learned through this journey was this:
Mission is not about what we do, but what God shows us.
At first, I thought of Vietnam as a “hard place to share the gospel.”
But through God’s eyes, I came to see Vietnam as a land filled with hope for the gospel.
Now is the time to obey—
To follow what God has shown us.
Prayer Requests
That God would grant wisdom and strategy for ministries that help Vietnamese churches share the gospel on their own.
That local pastors, their wives, and teachers would shine even brighter as gospel lights in their communities.
